Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Pliers holding toothAt our Redfern dental office, we offer a wide array of general dentistry services to keep your teeth and gums healthy at all stages of life. Sometimes when our wisdom teeth are causing problems to our surrounding teeth, an extraction may be the best solution for you.

The Growth Process

Tooth eruption is the process in which the tooth travels from beneath the jaw to enter the mouth and become visible to us. This is when we start to see our teeth breaking through. It can be painful for patients at times during the growth stages. A tooth is called “impacted” if its path is obstructed by any other tooth, bone or soft tissue.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Depending on the position of the impacted tooth inside the jawbone, there are four types of impaction:

  • Mesial Impaction
  • Vertical Impaction
  • Horizontal Impaction
  • Distal Impaction

An impacted wisdom tooth may cause gum swelling in the back of your mouth, difficulty or pain in opening your jaw, bad breath, bad taste in the mouth, and pain while chewing or biting. This is where we may decide an extraction is the best solution to get you feeling comfortable again and to protect the surrounding teeth from further damage.

Digital X-rays for Wisdom Teeth

X-rays of the wisdom teeth are taken to assess the positions, shapes and sizes of the tooth, the covering bone and the nerve. X-rays also locate cysts or tumours that may be associated with the tooth and to assist the surgeon to plan the surgical procedure.

Your Wisdom Tooth Procedure

At Redfern Dentist, it is most important our patients are feeling at ease and comfortable when they see us for treatment. Our dentist will walk you through each step and ensure you’re feeling relaxed. During your wisdom tooth procedure, pain relief and antibiotics is given to eliminate infection in the area and keep you feeling comfortable. When there is room for the wisdom tooth to erupt, it is only a minor surgical procedure lasting about 20-45 minutes. The procedure is completed while you are under local anaesthesia, so you feel comfortable and at ease. Once our dentist removes the wisdom tooth, we will clean and close the area and after 1 week you will have the stitch removed. Our team will walk you through the process, so you know exactly what to expect on your procedure.

At-Home Care

Following your wisdom tooth procedure, we will give you clear after care instructions, so you know exactly what to do at home. You can use an ice pack covered in a towel and place it on operated area from the outside (on the cheek) to reduce swelling. As well as take recommended pain relief to help you feel comfortable. Make sure to eat soft food and drink lots of water.
