Occlusal Splints

Sometimes patients present with problems of grinding their teeth (bruxing) especially at night, or with pain from the muscles of their jaw or jaw joints.

Grinding can cause pain in the muscles and jaw joints, abnormal wear of the tooth, cracks in teeth, tooth sensitivity and even death of the nerve in the tooth.  Treatment will include finding the source of the grinding habit (usually stress) and employing techniques to reduce the stress and break the habit.

An occlusal splint is a piece of acrylic which is worn to protect the teeth surfaces. The splint is a precision appliance that is made using a mould of the teeth.
